Benchmarking

June 1, 2018 is the deadline to submit 2017 building energy use benchmarking data to the California Energy Commission for buildings with more than 50,000 square feet of gross floor area and no residential utility accounts.
-To obtain aggregated whole-building data, create an account and register a building on PG&E's Building Benchmarking Portal.
-To enter your disclosable buildings into Portfolio Manager AND 2017 energy use date create an account with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.

Why should you benchmark your building?

Benchmarking helps determine how to lower your building's environmental footprint including energy, water and waste. For most properties, it is voluntary. However, effective January 2018 buildings with 50,000 square feet or greater are required by the state to submit data through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Multifamily Buildings with 17+ units must comply with the California Energy Commission Statewide Benchmarking program by June 2019.
  • Uncover, and quickly resolve, issues impacting your energy costs.
  • Earn an ENERGY STAR Certification to increase property value.
  • Identify cost-savings opportunities across your building portfolio.
  • Identify and resolve issues affecting energy use and costs sooner.
  • Helps accurately forecast and budget for current year utility expenses and equipment upgrades.
  • Validates and quantifies savings achieved from improvements and investments in energy efficiency.

Aggregated, whole building data is available to requesters as defined in CA state assembly bill AB 802. This legislation allows building owners (or authorized agents) to obtain the total energy usage data (across all tenants) for their building, in most cases without obtaining authorization. However, in the following cases, tenants will need to provide explicit authorization before the data can be released:
  • Building has fewer than 3 commercial units
  • Building has fewer than 5 residential units
  • Building has fewer than a combination of 5 residential and commercial units

Individual tenant-specific meter data is available to requesters who receive individual authorization from each tenant in the building. Previously, PG&E provided this information in compliance with CA state assembly bill AB 1103 and for requesters complying with city benchmarking ordinances. Although AB 1103 is no longer in effect, PG&E will continue to service benchmarking ordinance data requests using this method.
